Fine art

Overview

This category seeks creative and original entries from fine artists. All work must have been produced within the last 2 years.

The North of England has produced some of our greatest artists over the years including luminaries such as Damian Hirst, David Hockney and Barbara Hepworth amongst many others. There is an appetite for art in the North fed by the emergence of significant showcase venues and events such as The Baltic, Liverpool Biennial, the Northern Art Prize, and Yorkshire Sculpture Park. Having the confidence to forge a career in the incredibly tough and unforgiving art world is vital to an artist's success.

The Fine Art category of Northern Futures seeks to recognise and reward new and emerging artists in order to support their career development and give that much needed exposure.

Entries should show completed works in any medium, including digital, 2d or 3d, film and audio. Work should be of a high standard, and of exhibition quality. Work must be available to show between the exhibition dates as indicated on the competition home page including install and strike times.

Criteria

Work should be presented as a JPEG file of photographic images of final artworks. Digital work (non-film) may be presented as JPEF or PDF. Films can be entered into this category as Quicktime compressed files no larger than 30MB, or complete html links to video content on websites YouTube, Vimeo etc. JPEG image files should be saved in the RGB colour format (not CMYK). The JPEG files must not exceed 30MB. Audio files can also be uploaded as Mp3 files. Students are advised that the entry system will not allow any other file types to be uploaded so work should be formatted in advance to make sure the entry criteria has been met.

Entrants are reminded that any images and text should be legible once the PDF conversion process is complete or once the JPEG file has been saved so that the entry can be marked properly.

Rationale

As part of the entry process, entrants will be asked to submit a rationale (description) for their project. This should be prepared in advance and pasted in to the appropriate box during the submission process. The rationale should include details of any original brief or commission, processes used, any tools or techniques employed and any appropriate explanation of the work. This rationale is important as it will allow the judging panel to understand fully the aims and purpose of the work. Applicants are encouraged to present this information clearly and concisely in no more than 250 words.

Submission

Entrants should ensure that files are submitted in PDF or JPEG format (RGB colour only) as stills and Quicktime files for fim work. Audio files can also be uploaded as Mp3 files. Entries can either be one single file or multiple files, but the total entry size must not exceed 30MB. For further information and support, please visit the 'How to enter' section which includes handy FAQs before contacting the organisers via the contact section.
